Today is the 41st year(I'm not using Anniversary because that is a celebration) after the death of SSGT Edrico Rivera and PFC David Chaney high on a hilltop above the township of Long Binh in the Binh Thuan providence. It was election day and the 1st platoon of A Troop was awakened at 7 in the morning to drive out NVA and VC activity in Long Binh that was disrupting the election process that was takng place in town. As we headed down the beautiful meadow in typical CAV formation (in line) we did not know what was in store for us. Charlie had dug spider holes in the earth below where we would roll over and would like 'The Cowards' they were pop up as we passed and attempt to shoot us in the back. A16 had fallen behind the formation and as the gooks popped out they were surprised by the oncoming M48, they turned thier wrath of fire power on A16 killing SSGT Rivera and PFC David Chaney and bringing A16 to stop dead in it's tracks. At the time that this was going on, the platoon sergeant (sp?), SFC Kovolvi realized that the platoon was headed into an ambush and quickly changed the assault and redirected the platoon to a different area.

Larry,
I remember us sitting with Sgt.Rivera the night before talking about his heading home. I was on the tank (A16) right behind them when it all happened. I think of him often.
