Anyone know who strafed the HQ compound on Apr 1/70...Airforce or maybe Navy? The Red Flares went up in the center of the perimeter and I had just finished the walk through the village when I saw the two dots, coming from my right (North I think) I started hoofing it with everything I had and the 50 cal. (I think) were hitting all around me as I ran straight down the road to the wire. I would really like to meet those guys! Any ideas or info. out there? Too bad I waited 40 years to ask this question!

I was in Bravo Troop 2-1 Cav, 2AD, Ft. Hood, TX. in 1989. 2 of our troops went with 1-7 Cav, 1CD to Desert Shield in 1990. When we got back in April, 1991, we were permantly assigned to 1-7 cav, 1CD.

These two GREAT men gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country! One was a 36 year old father, husband, uncle and brother, who had less than 14 days left in country. The other was a 19 year old son, brother and uncle, who from the day that he got his orders had a premonition that he would never see his homeland again.
I can say that I am proud to have known and served with these two GREAT men! They are the reason that I get up everyday and say.....'What can I do today to make a difference!'
That's what they would have wanted!

Today is the 41st year(I'm not using Anniversary because that is a celebration) after the death of SSGT Edrico Rivera and PFC David Chaney high on a hilltop above the township of Long Binh in the Binh Thuan providence. It was election day and the 1st platoon of A Troop was awakened at 7 in the morning to drive out NVA and VC activity in Long Binh that was disrupting the election process that was takng place in town. As we headed down the beautiful meadow in typical CAV formation (in line) we did not know what was in store for us. Charlie had dug spider holes in the earth below where we would roll over and would like 'The Cowards' they were pop up as we passed and attempt to shoot us in the back. A16 had fallen behind the formation and as the gooks popped out they were surprised by the oncoming M48, they turned thier wrath of fire power on A16 killing SSGT Rivera and PFC David Chaney and bringing A16 to stop dead in it's tracks. At the time that this was going on, the platoon sergeant (sp?), SFC Kovolvi realized that the platoon was headed into an ambush and quickly changed the assault and redirected the platoon to a different area.

Larry,
I remember us sitting with Sgt.Rivera the night before talking about his heading home. I was on the tank (A16) right behind them when it all happened. I think of him often.

Hi Larry, I sent off a dvd for the 2/1 archives and should be at the reunion. I cannot make the reunions cause I'm a commercial fisherman and that is in the middle of my season. I would like to see firebase panzer & kofalvi pictures if possible...I am going to stop Wiesbaden in November for a day to see if I can find him or what became of him. I know he made Sergent Major and retired there, but that's about it. I sent him my videos (made from 8mm movies I took there)and sent them to Wiesbaden Education Center, where he was teaching, but have not heard back..don't even know if he's still alive, as he was quite a bit older than us. You can also try sending to nelliejuan@yahoo.com...one of them should work, thanks!

Hey Liver,
There was another guy with me from headquarters platoon and his name was Southerland. We got into Pleiku at the same time and we both left on the 1st. We didn't get a ride we were told to hit the gate and start hoofing it. I also only had the barrel and bolt left from my 16 so we were unarmed. I casn't tell you how many times we were shot at but the scariest part was when we came to a cross roads and there was a bunker in the center of it. I really didn't want to go past it but I knew we didn't stand a chance going back. There were arvans there and they had an old 30 cal. machinegun. I just knew they were gonna waste me and Southerland. We finally made it on foot to a building where we were to turn in our equipment. That jerk in there told me I was gonna have to pay for that m16. Yeah Right! I think from there we may have ridden a jeep or maybe even a forklift over to another highway where we were able to flag down a deuce and a half. That took us to the air strip where a plane was taking off and i think we had to run and jump on the tailgate cause he wasn't stopping.

Larry, that's crazy! I thought I was the shortest in the bunker all this time! I am curios how you got to the HQ perimeter and outa dodge. I got a hitchike on a Tank, but it only went to the edge of town and then I had to start walking alone...with the barrel of my m-16....I made it ok and went to the medics and there was a hell of a bloody scene in there...I got bandaged and headed for Col. Bonds office for the last of the paper work. Then off to the chopper pad...I'm surprised our paths did not cross... but it was all pretty hellish huh?
